The first Armenian theater with state status was founded in Yerevan on August 16, 1921 and was called the FIRST STATE THEATER. The ceremonial opening took place on January 25, 1922 with the performance of "Pepo" by Gabriel Sundukyan (director: Isahak Alikhanyan). On the first curtain of the theater, the painting "Armenia" by the famous artist Martiros Saryan was depicted, which after serving as a curtain for ten years became a large painting and now decorates the main foyer of the theater.
The theater gathered around it the best Armenian theater figures living in different countries and cities of the world. To this day, the people call it "MOTHER THEATER" - this is the best wording describing the complete essence of the theater.
In 1937, the theater was renamed after Gabriel Sundukyan.
In 1960, the theater became ACADEMIC.
