Description

Berdavan Castle is located near Berdavan village of Noyemberyan community of Tavush region, on a hill several hundred meters away from the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. It is believed that the Berdavan fortress was first mentioned in the 7th century in the data mentioned by an anonymous Georgian historian, according to which the fortress was called Ghalinjakar at that time. The outer walls of the castle are fortified with 11 cylindrical towers. It had a secret underground entrance leading to the gorge, as evidenced by a fragment of that secret passage preserved in the lower part of the east tower. There is a large collection of old khachkars next to the castle. The castle was rebuilt in 1983. According to historical sources, Ashot Yerkat, the king of Bagratuni, stayed for several days in Berdavan fortress during one of his marches.
