Aghjkaberd is located 16 km southwest of the city of Ijevan, Tavush marz, on the left bank of the Aghstev river, on the top of a wooded mountain. It was surrounded by high rocks on all sides, it was a military structure. All the walls of the castle, as well as the pyramidal walls, were built of bluish basalt. In the Middle Ages, the fortress and the surrounding province were called Kayen. According to tradition, Lenk Temur, hearing about the beautiful princess living in the fortress, ordered his troops to capture the fortress and bring the girl to him. Seeing that the fortress is already being captured, the princess throws herself into the river from the top of the fortress. After that the fort was named Aghjkaberd.
