Marmashen monastic complex is one of the well-preserved monuments in Shirak region. This large monastic complex greatly contributed to the development of the Armenian life. The big church is named after the Mother of God. Probably the names of the general complex, the nearby village, come from here. According to some opinions, the name "Marmashen" is a change of the word "Mariamashen". The other name of the ancient site, "Vahramaberd", suggests that there was also a government residence here. This opinion substantiates the tomb of Princess Sophia buried in a nearby hill cemetery.
