Admiring the beautiful view of the Black Fortress, you will see the Mother Armenia monument, which stands high on the western part of the city. The monument was built in 1975 by the sculptors Ara Sargsyan and E. Vardanyan and the famous architect Rafik Yeghoyan. It symbolizes the victories of the Armenians, especially the Soviet victory during the Second World War. A proudly standing woman holding an ear of wheat in her hands symbolizes victory. The statue is made of bronze and is the largest in Gyumri.
It is said that the backside of the statue is made to look like a dragon facing Turkey.
