Description

The monastic complex Aghjots is located 7 km southeast of Geghard, on the slope of a mountain. According to legend, at the beginning of the 4 century it was founded by Gregory the Illuminator as a convent. The current monastery was built in the 13th century. It was one of the religious and cultural centers of medieval Armenia. The walled monastery consists of the church of St. Stepanos, the vestibule-gavit, the church of St. Poghos-Petros, residential and auxiliary buildings of the 17th-18th centuries.
 In the vicinity of the monastery complex there is a vast cemetery with many khachkars.
The monastery was destroyed during the earthquake of 1679. It was restored and operated until the middle of the 18th century.
