Located in Alaverdi in the Lori region, Sanahin Monastery is one of the most impressive monasteries in Armenia. In 1999 Sanahin Monastery was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The legend says that the monastery was founded in the 4th century during the construction of the cross of Saint-Nshan. As for the name, it is assumed that Sanahin ("նրանից հին է") means "this is older than the other". According to the legends, Sanahin is “older” than Haghpat.
