Description

Goshavank is located on the outskirts of Gosh village of Diiljan community, on the right bank of Getik river. The monastery was built not far from the ruins of the old monastery named Getik, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. The current monastery was previously called Nor Getik. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Goshavank became one of the most famous religious and scientific centers of medieval Armenia, led by one of the most skilled scholars, lawyers and scholars of Armenia, Mkhitar Gosh, with the support and patronage of Prince Ivane Zakaryan. After the death of Mkhitar Gosh, the monastery was renamed Goshavank in 1213. The monastery is considered one of the great examples of Armenian architecture, the work of many talented architects, carpenters and stonemasons.
